13 Tips for Moving Into Your New Home

Congrats! You’re almost done purchasing a home, whether it’s new construction or an existing house. What do you need to know before, during and after your move into your new place?

Before the move

  • Make sure all of the utilities are turned on, set up and functioning properly. You don’t want any surprises once you’ve moved everything in!
  • If you’re buying an existing home, change all of the locks and garage door codes.
  • Connect and test all appliances: the furnace, water heater, washing machines, dryer, water softener, etc. If you’re buying an older home, check the water filters (replace if necessary) and clean the ducts.
  • Familiarize yourself with the electric panel and valve shutoff locations.
  • Look at the home safety: fire extinguisher(s), smoke detectors, outlets, stairs.
  • Budget for unexpected expenses during the move and after you move in.

During the move

  • Clean everything thoroughly before moving in boxes and heavy furniture. This will be your one chance to do so before the house is full of stuff.
  • Set up all of your large furniture and bedding before unloading all of your boxes. You need some place to relax and sleep while unpacking, which can take several days or weeks.
  • Wash sinks, toilets and bathtubs with cleaner before using, especially if you’re buying an existing home.
  • Pick up basic household tools if you don’t already have them, such as a vacuum cleaner, wrenches, a hammer, lawn mower, rake, cleaning supplies, etc.

After the move

  • Address any issues with the home or yard with the builder immediately after noticing them. Many builders will run over to fix something in your new home to assure you’re satisfied and happy. (Of course, if you’re buying an existing home, this should be done during the negotiations and home inspection.)
  • Live with the existing home for a while before making any major floor plan or decorative changes.
  • Enjoy your new home!
